The Warp
1980
As the years passed my parents came to feel that they must leave Eye Manor. In winter it was cold and, even in the few rooms that they used, conditions were what they called 'arctic'. The open fire, however wildly it raged, scarcely reached to the extremities of The Cockerell, which had become their winter living room. They decided to move into a cottage in the stable yard and, when they finally reached this, my father said to my mother; 'You know, Lettice, we should have made this move years ago'. But he had always also said that he would like to live out the rest of his days at Eye Manor and 'to go down with the sinking ship'. In fact he died a month or two after the move to Manor Cottage. His final illness began on the morning that a large load of furniture began to move from the house. Summoned by my mother, I almost collided with the huge furniture van at the front gate.
