Two years later, in November 1970, I had been asked by Gerald Savoy, Head of Plays at the BBC, to speak to viewers before the third transmission of ‘Cathy Come Home’, explaining what changes in the world of housing and homelessness there had been since the earlier transmissions of ‘Cathy’.
It was a unique situation. There was no interviewer to mediate between me and my audience. I spoke direct.
I don’t think any other writer has ever been asked to do this, nor do I think that any other artist or politician has, except in party political broadcasts. Always someone in the form of an interviewer or presenter has been placed between the speaker and his or her audience.
With hindsight I feel that what I said could have been more optimistic. Even so, the experience was extraordinary as I spoke directly to the millions of viewers about this issue which ‘Cathy Come Home’ had made a national priority.
It was a proud moment. Those were heady days.
