The Warp

Silver

Silver eating utensils and dishes were very important to people like my parents. Earlier on when the castle my father grew up in burned down, my grandfather risked his life to dash through the flames beneath a falling beam to rescue the family silver.

We laid it out for every meal and afterwards cleaned it in the pantry with blue methylated spirits and pink cleaning powder.

Even after most of it had been stolen my father insisted on eating from some of the few bits that remained of his own silver cutlery.

Eating off silver, widely stretching acres, huge piles of masonry in those days were still status symbols that even then helped people believe that they’d arrived in life. Now I suppose that has changed. Status symbols now are swimming pools or cars or holidays in the South of France or Spain.
